Aquaman is a superhero film, written and directed by Tyler Moody, based on the comic book series created by Paul Norris and Mort Weisinger.
Atlantis. An ancient empire, hidden beneath the vast depths of the ocean. Ruled by Orin, a strong and loyal king, it is an empire in turmoil. The people are restless and as Orin prepares to celebrate fatherhood, he faces the greatest challenge of his life when old nemesis Black Manta heralds the existence of a terror so great it may destroy Atlantis, and the world beyond, itself. A terror perhaps only Orin - only Aquaman - can stop...
- Ryan Gosling as Orin, king of Atlantis. As a baby, he was abandoned on Mercy Reef (which is above sea level at low tide, causing exposure to air which would be fatal to Atlanteans) because of his blond hair, which was seen by the superstitious Atlanteans as a sign of a curse they called "the Mark of Kordax." He would later return to Atlantis, and become king.
- Alyson Hannigan as Mera. From the mysterious Dimension Aqua, Mera married Orin, and become Queen of Altantis. She is currently carrying a child, whom she gives birth to in the course of the film, and names Arthur.
- Dule Hill as Cal. While in the comics, Cal was Black Manta's lieutenant, he is reimagined here as a longtime ally of Orin, and spokesperson for the world above sea. His presence in Atlantis is the source of much consternation among the public.
- Shemar Moore as Black Manta. Laying claim to the ocean's bounty of sunken treasure and other riches, Black Manta - an air-breathing human in a suit - has now turned his sights on the king of Atlantis, and is unwilling to let anyone get in his way.
Aquaman has appeared frequently in animated adaptations of the DC Universe, and made appearances in the CW television series Smallville. An Aquaman series, starring Justin Hartley, began production but was shelved after disappointing reactions to the pilot. Aquaman has also been featured in the series Entourage, where an adaptation is filmed by James Cameron, and starring Vincent Chase and Mandy Moore. A new film adaptation is being developed at Leonardo DiCaprio's film company, Appian Way, in co-ordination with Warner Brothers.
A long time fan of Aquaman, Tyler Moody - seeing the successes of previous virtual adaptations of superhero stories - decided to develop his own adaptation of the comic book series.
The film premiered on May 7th, to a mixed critical response.
